The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Universitas Syiah Kuala (FKIP USK) hosted a public lecture titled “Malaysia’s Sports Development and Diplomacy: From Policy to the Global Arena.” The session featured Dr. Hasnul Faizal Bin Hushin Amri, Education Counsellor of Education Malaysia Indonesia (EMI) at the Embassy of Malaysia in Jakarta. The event took place at the FKIP USK Auditorium in Banda Aceh on 21 November 2025.
USK Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Agussabti, M.Si., IPU, expressed his gratitude and appreciation for Dr. Hasnul’s presence and willingness to share his insights. He emphasized that the visit carries significant value for strengthening cooperation between USK and universities in Malaysia.
“USK and Malaysia have already collaborated through various programs such as scholarships, student exchanges, and faculty mobility. Therefore, we believe Dr. Hasnul’s visit is truly meaningful,” Prof. Agussabti said.
He further noted that the term sukan in the lecture title refers to sports—an area offering wide opportunities for academic and institutional collaboration. For this reason, he hoped the event would not only serve as a platform for knowledge-sharing but also open doors for new partnership initiatives.
During his lecture, Dr. Hasnul traced the evolution of Malaysia’s sports development from the colonial era to the modern period, where sports have become a tool for national unity, character-building, and national identity.
He emphasized that Malaysia’s sporting achievements are not accidental but the result of a clear, structured system—beginning with sports education in schools, youth athlete development, sport science integration, and high-performance competitions.
This ecosystem is anchored in the National Sports Policy, which focuses on three core pillars: Sport for All, Sport for Excellence, and Sport Industry. According to Dr. Hasnul, sports diplomacy has become an essential element in contemporary international relations.
“We may compete on the field, but we are brothers off the field. Malaysia and Indonesia have tremendous potential to collaborate, exchange experiences, and even share common aspirations to elevate Southeast Asian sports onto the world stage,” he said.
The event was also attended by several university leaders and members of the academic community, including the Director of the USK Graduate School, Prof. Dr. Hizir; Chairman of the Office of International Affairs (OIA) USK, Dr. Muzailin Affan; Acting Dean of FKIP USK, Dr. Sanusi, S.Pd., M.Si.; vice deans; and lecturers from FKIP USK.
The lecture concluded with the presentation of a souvenir to the speaker and a group photo session with all guests and participants.
