Syafura La Djuna, an accounting student at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), is participating in a student exchange program at National Quemoy University (NQU), Taiwan, from September 2026 to January 2027. The program provides her with an opportunity to broaden her academic horizons, develop intercultural communication skills, and enhance her independence through international learning experiences.
Syafura explained that her main motivation for joining the program was to step outside her comfort zone, gain new perspectives, and learn directly in a multicultural environment. During her studies at NQU, she has had the opportunity to engage in discussions and exchange ideas with students from different countries while improving her English communication skills and learning Mandarin.
Beyond academics, Syafura has also explored Taiwanese culture through various activities with NQU students, including the celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival. These experiences have allowed her to learn about local traditions, build cross-cultural friendships, and develop a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity.
Living in a new country has also taught Syafura to become more independent and adaptable. She has faced various challenges, from language barriers to adjusting to local customs. However, these experiences have strengthened her confidence and encouraged her to become more willing to embrace new opportunities.
For Syafura, the student exchange program is not merely an opportunity to study abroad but also a journey of personal growth that broadens her perspective. She hopes that her experiences will inspire other USK students to pursue international opportunities and develop their potential.
“Do not wait until you feel completely ready to start trying. Prepare yourself as best as you can, improve your language skills, actively seek information about available programs, and do not be afraid to apply, even if you feel you have limitations,” she advised.
Syafura’s participation in the program also contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) by expanding access to international learning experiences and academic perspectives, SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by encouraging students to pursue opportunities for personal and academic development, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and cultural perspectives across countries. This experience is expected to strengthen USK students’ global competencies and encourage greater engagement in the international academic community.
